Director, Programs & Services
Assistant Professor, Department of
Educational Policy Studies
Kristopher Wells has one of the most unique and exciting jobs in Canada. He is a researcher with the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services and also works with Edmonton Public Schools as their sexual orientation and gender identity consultant. In this role, Kris is afforded the rare opportunity to help turn research into everyday practice to help "make it better" for sexual and gender minority students, staff, and families. Kris first started working with sexual and gender minority youth as a beginning teacher in the early 1990s and then went on to serve as a volunteer facilitator and director of Youth Understanding Youth for more than 10 years. It was these formative, first-hand experiences working with youth that led Kris to earn a doctorate in education and work with Dr. Andre Grace to develop Camp fYrefly. As a youth once told Kris, the power and promise of Camp fYrefly lies within the fact that "camp doesn't just change lives, it saves them."
